TQS II
Element C

Teacher Quality Standard II: Teachers establish a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for a diverse population of students.

Element C: Teachers engage students as individuals, including those with diverse needs and interests, across a range of ability levels by adapting their teaching for the benefit of all students.

Evidence

During week nine, students got a lot accomplished and it was another very successful week. I gave directions to the students as I walked around and changed slides using a remote control.  Additionally, I was able to provide extra help to each student as required to ensure their success. My students feel respected, and comfortable sharing their ideas. As I continue to create a safe and inclusive environment, students feel free to reach out about artistic inquiries and ask for help.  In my classes, some special education students need additional assistance with their assignment, while others are gifted and talented. So, I aim to reach out to bridge the gap, providing equal opportunity for all my students.

I assisted students with getting ideas down, such as helping McJagger, as well as Andrea, to design a floor plan for the house of their dreams. As I worked with McJagger in drawing his layout, I soon discovered he actually knew exactly what he wanted his floor plan to look like and where he wanted everything to be. I was impressed when even the students that usually are not as engaged were talking about what they wanted in their dream house. I haven't seen them so engaged before. They were actually getting excited for their future. For all the times students have said "I don't know what to do" in this instance they knew exactly what they wanted and were able to openly share and express their interests with fellow students and me when I modified my teaching to accommodate each individual student.

For all lesson plans, I assist students in getting their ideas down through providing prompting questions and challenging them to push their ideas and concepts. One example of this was when I encouraged Tony in the development of his mural that was in support of inequality of the black community. I continue to assist the students to bring their ideas to life by teaching principles of mathematical scale and measurement, as well as techniques. Through these examples I have met the TQS II Element C.
