TQS I
Element C
Teacher Quality Standard I: Teachers demonstrate mastery of and pedagogical expertise in the content they teach. The secondary teacher has knowledge of literacy and mathematics and is an expert in his or her content endorsement area(s).
Element C: Teachers demonstrate knowledge of the content, central concepts, inquiry, appropriate evidence-based instructional practices, & specialized characteristics of the disciplines being taught.

I started the class giving a demo on the basic layout for making a face; where eyes, nose and mouth need to be placed on the head. I gave them handouts for them to look at as well as demoing on the board so everyone could see. Since I taught it a few times throughout the day I was able to adapt the lesson accordingly and make tweaks, being more specific in my instruction each lesson I taught. My instruction during the 4th period seemed to be the most effective. I was specific in presenting the layout, providing measurements instead of just saying where the eyes, nose and mouth generally go, as well as accommodating for each students’ needs.
Each of these images/artifacts display my skill and knowledge of portrait features by meticulously placing them using mathematical formulas. I shared my portraiture expertise of how to build a base by making a grid to help place each specific feature. The page is divided into four blocks; within each block, lines are spaced an inch apart horizontally and vertically. Thus a grid is created with lines marked starting at the center, from zero to five within each block (see attached examples). When students followed the step by step guidelines, they were able to develop a self-portrait which started with the fundamentals.
When drawing portraits, there are several details to take into account: the scale of the face, the angle, and proportions all require mathematical calculations, or the finished work would not look right. By breaking down the process, showing students each step that needs to be taken, and isolating certain characteristics that must be included, TQS I Element C is achieved.
